Summary

Implementing EO 14168 and the DEI-content orders (DoD implementation memorandum, February 2025), the Pentagon compiled a database of more than 26,000 images flagged for removal across all service branches — with officials estimating up to 100,000 items once social media was culled. The sweep was keyword-driven: files containing the string "gay" were flagged regardless of context, capturing photos of the B-29 Enola Gay and of service members with the surname Gay, alongside content on women in combat and military firsts. The episode demonstrates the mechanism by which terminology lists translated into mass content deletion, with collateral removals unrelated to any policy target. (Military policy actions in section 4.)

Status

Removals proceeded in March 2025; DoD acknowledged some mistaken removals would be corrected, but no comprehensive restoration accounting has been published.
