Terms of use
The Trans Data Initiative is open to everyone, with no account. These terms say what you may do with what you find here. Last updated .
1. Public records
Bill texts, court filings, Federal Register documents and IRS Form 990 filings are public records, and we claim no rights in them.
2. Our work
The project's own work, its curation, summaries, tags, notes, statuses and analysis, is licensed under Creative Commons BY-NC 4.0: you may share and adapt it for non-commercial purposes if you credit us. Cite it as: Caraballo, A., Chapman, A., Reed, E., Saila, L., Vaca, A. Trans Data Initiative. transdatainitiative.org.
3. Other sources keep their own terms
Some data comes from other projects under their own licences, which you must follow when you reuse it:
- CC BY-NC 4.0(opens another site): The team's own data: side, summaries, tags, notes, law status and the team's analysis (and the title of a pre-2009 or Sheet-added bill, which is the team's own curator summary). Caraballo, A., Chapman, A., Reed, E., Saila, L., Vaca, A. Trans Data Initiative. transdatainitiative.org.
- CC BY 4.0(opens another site): LegiScan bill data (titles, status, sponsors, dates, links) and bill text. Bill data and text from LegiScan (legiscan.com), licensed CC BY 4.0 and used in modified form. LegiScan does not endorse the Trans Data Initiative.
- Public domain (CC0)(opens another site): Bill text and data for bills LegiScan does not hold. Bill data from Open States (openstates.org), a project of Plural Policy.
- Free of known copyright(opens another site): Court dockets, filings, opinions and oral-argument audio. Court records from CourtListener and the RECAP Archive (courtlistener.com), a project of the Free Law Project, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
4. People in this data
The records name real people, and some are private individuals, such as members of the public who testified at hearings. Do not use this site to harass, threaten or expose anyone, and do not republish a private individual's personal details from it. Never identify a minor from anything here.
5. Bulk use
Do not scrape the site in bulk or send automated traffic heavy enough to slow it for others. If you need data in bulk for research or reporting, write to us at info@transdatainitiative.org.
6. No warranty
The data is provided as-is. Much of it is compiled or matched by software and can be wrong. Check the primary source (the bill text, the filed document, the Federal Register or the 990 filing) before you publish or rely on it. As far as the law allows, we are not liable for any loss that comes from using the site or its data.
7. Privacy
The site sets no cookies, runs no analytics or tracking, and has no accounts. Cloudflare, which hosts it, processes each request, including your IP address, to deliver and protect the site.
8. Corrections and takedowns
To report an error or ask us to take something down, see Corrections and Takedowns, or write to info@transdatainitiative.org.
9. Changes
We may update these terms; the date above shows when they last changed.
