Summary
BJS removed from the NCVS — the ~240,000-respondent annual survey that is the nation's primary measure of criminal victimization — the gender-identity question, the sex-assigned-at-birth question, and a gender-identity clarification item (all added in 2016), and pulled associated interviewer training materials; a question on victimization attributed to gender-identity prejudice was paused and later reinstated after legal review. NCVS data had shown transgender people experience violent victimization at roughly four times the rate of cisgender people; the deletions make that series impossible to continue. Changes were made without announcement and surfaced through OMB paperwork filings.
Status
In effect; gender-identity measurement remains absent from NCVS collection. A fall 2025 OMB clearance package drew formal opposition comments (see 2025-09-22 item). Peer-reviewed documentation of the erasure published 2026.
