Summary

Concluding the investigations opened February 12 and June 2025, ED and HHS found MDE and MSHSL in violation of Title IX for allowing transgender girls on girls' alpine and Nordic ski, lacrosse, track and field, volleyball, and softball teams - roughly a dozen athletes statewide since 2014, about 0.005% of Minnesota's student-athletes - and demanded policy reversal within ten days. Attorney General Keith Ellison refused, citing the Minnesota Human Rights Act.

ED referred MDE to DOJ on January 26, 2026; DOJ filed suit March 30, 2026; litigation pending (see sections 3 and 10).
