Summary

SAMHSA ordered termination of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline's LGBTQ+ Youth Specialized Services — the "Press 3" option, PRIDE text line, and chat connecting callers under 25 to counselors trained in LGBTQ+ youth crisis support — effective July 17, 2025, announcing that the more than $33 million appropriated for the subnetwork (FY24; $29.7 million directed in FY23) had been fully expended and would not be continued. The Trevor Project, lead subnetwork contractor, reported the service had handled roughly 1.5 million contacts since 2022. SAMHSA's announcement said the Lifeline would no longer "silo" services and referred to "LGB+" youth, dropping the "T." (See also sections 2, 12.)

Status

Service terminated July 17, 2025 and not restored; several states created backfill programs; congressional attempts to restore funding (September 2025) did not reverse the termination.
