Summary

After May 23, 2025 guidance invited transgender airmen and guardians with 15-18 years of service to apply for Temporary Early Retirement Authority as part of voluntary separation — and after retirement orders issued in June 2025 with separation dates of September-December 2025 — the Air Force on August 4, 2025 disapproved every pending TERA exception-to-policy request and rescinded already-approved retirements, later claiming applicants had been "prematurely notified." Roughly a dozen members lost pensions and TRICARE eligibility they had been formally granted, leaving them the choice of a junior-enlisted-style lump-sum separation payment or involuntary removal. Seventeen affected members, led by Master Sgt. Logan Ireland, sued in the Court of Federal Claims on November 13, 2025 (Ireland v. USA), alleging the rescissions violated Air Force instructions permitting revocation only for fraud or error (see section 10).

Revocation stands; Ireland v. USA pending in the Court of Federal Claims. Update, Sept. 23, 2026: On July 22, 2026, the Court of Federal Claims (Judge Elaine Kaplan) denied the government's partial motion to dismiss for lack of subject-matter jurisdiction (ECF 21); on August 11, 2026 the government filed a further partial motion to dismiss, a motion to remand, and a motion to stay proceedings, with plaintiffs' response due September 8, 2026 (Ct. Fed. Cl. No. 1:25-cv-01921).
