In late March 2025 the directors of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities and the National Institute of Nursing Research were placed on administrative leave. NIMHD is the institute that holds and administers the health-disparity population designations, including the 2016 SGM designation narrowed earlier that month.

Status

NIMHD survived as an institute — Congress fully funded all 27 institutes, centers, and offices in the most recent budget negotiations — but the narrowed designation stands.
