Summary

BJS removed gender-identity and sex-assigned-at-birth questions from the NCVS (change dated March 3, 2025 per KFF's tracker), and also stripped gender-identity content from at least three other collections — the School Crime Supplement, the Survey on Sexual Victimization (PREA-mandated), and the Survey of Inmates in Local Jails. NCVS data had shown transgender people experience violent victimization at multiples of the cisgender rate; the removals end federal measurement of anti-trans criminal victimization. The NCVS hate-crime motivation question was paused and later reinstated. (See also sections 7, 12.)
