SUPPLEMENT: NIH'S SEXUAL AND GENDER MINORITY RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE WAS DISMANTLED — DISTINCT FROM THE GRANT TERMINATIONS THE INDEX ALREADY COVERS

Summary

The "NIH Strategic Plan to Advance Research on the Health and Well-being of Sexual and Gender Minorities, Fiscal Years 2021–2025" expired at the close of FY2025 on September 30, 2025. NIH had formally begun the successor: a Federal Register RFI published May 9, 2024 (89 FR doc. 2024-10134, comments due June 26, 2024) and companion Guide notice NOT-OD-24-122 (released May 9, 2024, responses due July 15, 2024) solicited input to "establish NIH priorities in SGM health-related research for the next five years," expressly framed as being "in accordance with the 21st Century Cures Act, requiring NIH to regularly update their strategic plans." No FY2026–2030 plan has been issued. Relatedly, the SGMRO's annual SGM research portfolio reports, published for FY2016 through FY2023, ceased; no FY2024 or FY2025 report was released.

Status

In effect (lapsed). Approximately eleven months into FY2026 no successor plan exists. NOT-OD-24-122 remains live in the NIH Guide with no rescission, withdrawal, or extension banner, and a Federal Register query returns no NIH document mentioning "sexual and gender minority" after October 21, 2024.
