Summary
After OCR found on April 17, 2026 that four Kansas districts violated Title IX and FERPA through gender-inclusive facility, athletics and parental-notification policies, Olathe Public Schools submitted a voluntary resolution agreement on May 8, 2026 committing to bar students from opposite-sex facilities and athletics, treat gender-support plans as parent-accessible education records, and certify compliance annually on June 1 of 2026, 2027 and 2028, while denying wrongdoing. Shawnee Mission School District declined on May 4, 2026, calling the investigation a "sham process." The Education Department rejected Olathe's proposed agreement in June 2026 and issued both districts a ten-day ultimatum.
Status
Olathe's compliance offer rejected by OCR; enforcement and possible funding-termination proceedings pending against both districts. (See also section 5.)
