Summary

NPS deleted the words "transgender" and "queer" from the Stonewall National Monument website and shortened "LGBTQ+" to "LGB" throughout, recasting the 1969 uprising as part of an "LGB rights movement" and removing references to transgender participants. On February 26, 2025, NPS similarly altered the Pauli Murray Family Home page ("LGB") and blocked from public view a Murray biography page that had discussed pronouns. The edits drew formal protests from 72 House members and New York officials.

Status

Page edits remain in place per last available reporting. Related developments: the administration settled a suit and resumed flying the Pride flag at Stonewall on April 13, 2026, and on June 12, 2026 a federal judge ordered restoration of national park interpretive signage (including LGBTQ history) removed under the administration's history-review directives, an order the First Circuit stayed pending appeal on July 2, 2026 (see sections 8 and 10).
