After Maine's "final warning" deadline passed, ED referred Maine's Title IX noncompliance to DOJ for enforcement litigation and initiated administrative proceedings to suspend or terminate Maine DOE's federal K-12 formula and discretionary funding. DOJ sued Maine on April 16, 2025 (United States v. Maine DOE, D. Me. No. 1:25-cv-00173; see section 3). USDA separately froze ~$3 million in child-nutrition administrative funds, which Maine successfully sued to restore (settled May 2, 2025; see section 8).
Status
DOJ suit pending - Maine's motion for judgment on the pleadings filed July 31, 2026, response due September 1, 2026; as of roughly seven months into the administration (Aug. 2025) Maine's federal education funds were still flowing and no completed ED termination has been publicly documented.
