Summary
An internal "emergency message" instructs SSA employees: "Effective immediately, we can no longer process changes to the sex field on the NUMIDENT" (the master Social Security number record), limiting the field to male (M) or female (F) and citing EO 14168. Field offices are directed to deny all pending and future sex-marker change requests. SSA also removed its public webpage explaining how to change the sex identification on Social Security records (see section 12). The change reverses the 2022 self-attestation policy and forecloses the last routinely available federal record correction.
Status
In effect; SSA continues to refuse all sex-field updates as of 2026.
