Summary

A new implementing memorandum, signed May 8, 2025, restarted the separation machinery after the Supreme Court stay: active-duty members with gender dysphoria had until June 6, 2025 to elect voluntary separation (reserve component: July 7, 2025); those not self-identifying would be involuntarily separated thereafter, identified through medical records. Hegseth framed the purge as "the president's agenda... what the American people voted for and we're going to continue to relentlessly pursue it." Pentagon figures at the time: ~4,200 diagnosed members; ~1,000 self-identified.

Status

Deadlines executed in 2025; involuntary phase constrained by the 2026 Talbott rulings.
