Summary

Following Harmeet Dhillon's confirmation as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights (April 2025), the division's eleven sections received new mission statements built around the President's executive orders rather than traditional civil-rights enforcement, including "Protecting Children from Chemical and Surgical Mutilation" and "Keeping Men Out of Women's Sports." Attorneys were reassigned to task forces on those priorities; managers were reshuffled in what career staff described as a push-out. By the end of May 2025 roughly 250 attorneys — about 70% of the division's lawyers — had left, and Dhillon swore in more than 100 replacements drawn largely from the conservative legal movement. LGBTQ-protective enforcement (education, employment, policing) effectively ceased as an affirmative priority.

Status

In effect; the reoriented division litigates the Maine/California/Minnesota Title IX suits, the Loudoun County intervention, and school-district investigations described below.
