The party gap
Where a pollster published a party breakdown, this compares Democrats and Republicans on the same question. Each row plots the share who chose the more skeptical end of the pollster’s own scale — Oppose, Disagree, Disapprove, should not be allowed, or morally wrong, whichever the question offered — so nothing here guesses which side of a bare “Support / Oppose” item is the restrictive one. See Wording for why that guess is refused elsewhere on this site.
What is and is not included. This covers verified US polls whose source published a plain Democrat /
Republican subgroup (not a “lean” split, a registration split, or a non-US party system), on a question whose response options form a
recognizable two-ended scale (Support/Oppose, Agree/Disagree, Approve/Disapprove, Should/should not be allowed, Morally acceptable/wrong)
where both parties’ own figures land on that same scale, built from the same set of response options — a side that reports its own extra
summary row under a name the other side doesn’t use is left out rather than guessed at, the same discipline as everything else. Items without
that shape — most “which comes closer to your view” forced-choice items, for instance — are not comparable this way and are left out rather than
forced to fit. Polls of trans people are never included here, whatever breakdown they publish.
