Verification note. MEASUREMENT CHANGE, recorded because it matters for trend work: the 2024 GSS Codebook (Release 1, 19 May 2025) states that the cross-section now collects sex through SEXBIRTH1 (sex recorded at birth) and SEXNOW2 (self-reported sex), replacing SEXNOW1. The word 'transgender' does not appear anywhere in the 2024 public-use codebook, and no SEXNOW2 frequency table was found in it, so the 2024 wave yields no transgender self-identification estimate comparable to 2021 and 2022. SEXBIRTH1 wording and frequencies read directly from the codebook; percentages are UNWEIGHTED.
Figures below are transcribed from these documents. Where they disagree with the source, the source governs.
Questions asked (1)
GSS variable SEXBIRTH1 - sex recorded at birth; 2024 measurement change from SEXNOW1 to SEXNOW2 removed the 'transgender' response option
Was your sex recorded as male or female at birth?
Wording notes: binary-only response set | paired in 2024 with SEXNOW2 ('self-reported sex') rather than the 2018-2022 SEXNOW1 item that offered a 'transgender' option
neutral — standard sex-at-birth item; the analytically significant change is on the companion item, not this one
