Verification note. Methodology (field dates, n=20,762, modeled error +/-1.0, weighting scheme including the trans-respondent weight) confirmed from The 19th's own methodology write-up via search. The 2024 results pages at 19thnews.org return HTTP 402 to automated fetching, so no question wordings or percentages were retrieved. Record kept because this is one of the largest general-population samples in the corpus that asks trans-specific items and includes a trans respondent subsample. || FULLY RESOLVED - this record went from zero questions to a documented split-sample experiment. 19thnews.org returns HTTP 402 to the fetch tool but serves normally to curl with a browser user agent. Methodology confirmed verbatim: fielded 'August 26 to September 4, 2024, among a national sample of 20,762 U.S. adults 18+... Results for this non-probability survey have an error estimate of plus or minus 1.0 percentage point. Data have been weighted for age, race, sex, education and geography using the Census Bureau's American Community Survey... In addition, data for transgender respondents have been weighted for political party identification and gender using the KFF/The Washington Post Trans Survey.' All stored methodology matches. THE SUBSTANTIVE RECOVERY: The 19th ran a deliberate SPLIT-SAMPLE experiment on gender-affirming care. All respondents first read a definition, quoted verbatim in the preamble field below. Then half were asked about the RIGHT of transgender minors to access such care and half about LAWMAKERS restricting it. The result is one of the cleanest question-wording demonstrations in this database: 60 percent oppose the right of transgender minors to access gender-affirming care, while 54 percent - including half of Republicans - do not support lawmakers banning or restricting it. Also recorded: 72 percent say politicians are not informed enough about gender-affirming care for minors to make fair policy (roughly unchanged from 2023), 56 percent support the right of transgender adults to access such care, and The 19th's reported 2023 figure of 17 percent who thought lawmakers should focus on restricting minors' care. STILL MISSING: the literal item stems for the two split arms - The 19th publishes the definition verbatim but paraphrases the question stems - and any breakdown of the transgender respondent subsample, whose size is not stated.
Figures below are transcribed from these documents. Where they disagree with the source, the source governs.
Questions asked (4)
split-sample arm A: the right of transgender minors to access gender-affirming care
Gender-affirming care for transgender minors includes any kind of care designed to support and affirm their gender identity, including therapy, consultations with doctors, hormones or puberty blockers, other medication, and, rarely, surgery.
[stem paraphrased by The 19th] the respondent's opinion on the right of transgender minors to have access to gender-affirming care
Wording reconstructed from: The 19th News, 'The State of Our Nation', September 10 2024; the definition preamble is quoted verbatim but the stem is described rather than quoted
Oppose the right of transgender minors to access gender-affirming care
60%
Wording notes: split sample: asked of half the respondents | all respondents first read a definition of gender-affirming care that explicitly includes therapy and notes surgery is rare | asks about a RIGHT, which is the arm that produces majority opposition
neutral — the shared definition is unusually careful and even-handed for this topic; the arm's distinctiveness is the rights framing, which is the experimental manipulation rather than a defect
split-sample arm B: lawmakers banning or restricting gender-affirming care for minors
Gender-affirming care for transgender minors includes any kind of care designed to support and affirm their gender identity, including therapy, consultations with doctors, hormones or puberty blockers, other medication, and, rarely, surgery.
[stem paraphrased by The 19th] the respondent's opinion on lawmakers restricting gender-affirming care for transgender minors
Wording reconstructed from: The 19th News, 'The State of Our Nation', September 10 2024
Do not support lawmakers banning or restricting gender-affirming care for minors
54%
Thought lawmakers should focus on restricting such care
17%
Wording notes: split sample: asked of the other half of the respondents | asks about legislative action rather than about the underlying right, and flips the majority
neutral — same definition preamble as arm A; the only manipulated element is whether the object is a right or a legislative ban
Subgroup figures (1)
the right of transgender adults to access gender-affirming care
[stem paraphrased by The 19th] the respondent's opinion on the right of transgender adults to access gender-affirming care
Wording reconstructed from: The 19th News, 'The State of Our Nation', September 10 2024
Support the right of transgender adults to access gender-affirming care
56%
Wording notes: the adult version draws majority support where the minor version draws majority opposition, within the same survey
unclear — the stem is not published; whether the adults item carried the same definition preamble is not stated
whether politicians are informed enough about gender-affirming care for minors
[stem paraphrased by The 19th] whether politicians are informed enough about gender-affirming care for minors to make fair policy
Wording reconstructed from: The 19th News, 'The State of Our Nation', September 10 2024
Politicians are NOT informed enough about gender-affirming care for minors to make fair policy
72%
Politicians are informed enough (complement, matching the 24 percent The 19th reported for this wave in its April 2025 story)
24%
Wording notes: asks about policymaker competence rather than about the policy
unclear — stem not published
