Model bills and bill families
Some bills share much of their wording. These pages show two ways of finding that: model bills, which are template texts that bills were matched against, and families, which are groups of bills whose text closely overlaps each other's.
Every bill in this section is labeled Anti-LGBTQ+. Each model bill and each family has at least three bills.
Model bills (17)
Each row is a template, with the number of matched bills at each match level. Select a name to see its bills.
Families (267)
Groups of bills whose text closely overlaps, each named for its earliest bill.

How to read these pages
- Model bill
- A template text that bills were compared against. Each model bill here has a name, a subject, the year it first appeared, and a source for its text: the model-bill document itself, or an introduced bill that stands in for it (a stand-in bill). Bills were matched to it by comparing their text.
- Match levels
- Each matched bill is labeled with how close its text is, strongest first.
- Near-verbatim Bills that carry the template's text nearly word for word.
- Derived Bills that are built on the template's text.
- Shares provisions Bills that borrow some of the template's provisions.
- Bills that are on the same subject, but no shared text backs the match. This is not a claim that one copied the other.
- Filed before the template
- A bill marked this way was filed before the template first appeared, so it may be one of the template's sources rather than a copy of it.
- Family
- A group of bills found by comparing bills with each other, with no model bill needed. Two bills are linked when their text closely overlaps, and a family is every bill connected through such links. A family can be one state's bill refiled over several years, or similar bills in different states. A family whose bills were filed in more than one state carries a badge saying so. Each family is named for its origin: its earliest bill by year, with the bill key breaking a tie.
- What a match shows
- That the texts overlap. It does not show who drafted a bill, and filing order alone does not show which bill copied which.
